Laser Cut Goodness

On March 21, 2012, in Other Projects, by Vlad Cazan

About a month ago I got some very good news regarding a new piece of equipment being installed at the lab. It was a laser cutter and I was super happy to get training on it the next week.

After the training I was free to use the laser cutter as I wished to aid the process of design in our lab. Pretty sweet.

The first thing I wanted to build was a arduino project case I saw on the internet which featured a new design that allowed the entire case to be created out of 3 pieces of wood.

Next I stumbled on a kickstarter project called SketchChair which allowed you to design your own furniture in 2D and generate svg files of prices you can cut out and snap together to create the design in 3d. It was crazy what this software could do and I quickly sent them 20$ for a contributor license to try the software before its released.

Currently I am using the software to design a custom rolling device for a child to help him gain strength in his legs by allowing him to turn around. The software allows us to easily prototype small models before we generate a real life device. We finally are happy with a design and haw printed a real size model of the device.

This laser printer has really given me and the lab an opportunity to build things that we would have never been able to build.
